(4 Nov 2014) Police in Rio de Janeiro conducted a large operation against drug dealers on Tuesday in the city's largest favela.
Around 300 military police, including the special operations battalion, raided Rocinha in the early hours of Tuesday to combat the return of drug lords to the pacified favela.
A violent shooting between police and criminals disturbed residents but no one was reportedly hurt, police said.
Authorities detained 28 people in total but at least two suspects were released after being taken to the police station.
Rocinha, along with dozens of other favelas in Rio was part of authorities' pacification program aimed at driving out the violent and heavily armed gangs ahead of the 2014 World Cup and the Olympic Games that the city will host in 2016.
