Lubenice are located on a high gorge above the sea, on the west coast of Cres, at 378 meters above sea level.
The town of Lubenica is over four thousand years old, and the population has never been interrupted; which is confirmed by the found surrounding tumuli from the Bronze and Iron Ages. In antiquity, Lubenice is mentioned as a well-fortified and strategically important city of Hibernitia (i.e. "winter" or "cold settlement", most likely due to the frequent cold wind that is common in hilltop settlements), from which a branch of the main Roman road from Osor to White. At that time, it was one of the four most important places on the island of Cres with a fully formed urban center. At the foot of the village is an important villa rustica with the surrounding agricultural area and the port. Numerous archaeological materials from antiquity were found there (sarcophagus, Egyptian inscriptions, amphorae, money, jewelry, etc.). In the Middle Ages, the town was again surrounded by walls and once again became the center of the parish. Today, Lubenice is a small local center with about 40 buildings and 24 permanent residents.[1]
On February 1, 2005, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia nominated the village of Lubenice for inclusion in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites in Europe.
