9. Grasshopper Glacier
Don't get the wrong idea, this isn't a glacier that is comprised of only grasshoppers, but it wouldn't be too far off to claim that. In Montana, grasshoppers and locusts are numerous, and they cause a lot of problems for the locals. But for one glacier near Cooke City, there are literally millions grasshoppers frozen within a 1-mile long and half-mile wide sheet of ice.
8. A "Monster" Virus
Many people picture big items being found in ice as the more "important discoveries" of the kind, but there have been very small things found in ice that are just as important, such many microorganisms that have been discovered in ice over the years. One of these included a 30,000 year old virus in 2014 that wasn't just recovered, but revived.
7. 25-Million Year Old Lake
There are a lot of frozen lakes in the world, particularly in what we know as Antarctica, where the permafrost is so thick that it can be dozens of feet deep. To that end, scientists have been drilling in Antarctica for years to try and find the "bottoms" of these ice caps, and one time they came upon a lake that apparently had been frozen for over 25-million years.
6. Woolly Rhinoceros
In the Siberian riverbank in Yakutia in 2015, a frozen river was found to be the home of a Woolly Rhinoceros, a creature that once existed over 10,000 years ago.
5. 10,000 Foot Mountain Range
When you think about mountain ranges, you think about them being towering entities in the sky, but in Antarctica, there is a 10,000 foot tall mountain range that is almost completely covered up by snow and ice. They're known as the Gamburtsev Mountains, and scientists are said to have known about them for about 50 years. But as to what else we know about the mountains, it's scarce in terms of information.
4. A One-Thousand Year Old Forest
Despite the perception, there are many ways that glaciers form, including being able to be put on top of things without crushing or destroying what was underneath them at the time. This was proven in full in Alaska, when the Mendenhall Glacier began to melt heavily at the turn of the century, and as it did, trees began to poke out of the ground where the glacier once stood. At its peak, the glacier was almost 37 square miles in size.
3. Ichthyosaurs Graveyard
In the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, a group of scientists were able to find a "graveyard" full of remains from a long extinct aquatic creature known as the Ichthyosaurs. To those who don't know, the Ichthyosaurs were: "a group of large, fast-swimming marine reptiles that lived during the Mesozoic Era, about 245 million to 90 million years ago"
2. "Juanita"
On Mount Ampato, located at the Argentina-Chile border, some scientists were doing some studies when they came across a young woman's body buried in the ice of the mountain. Specifically, it was found in a crater via a bundle that had fallen from a site at the summit of the mountain that belonged to the Incan people.
1. Fish Eating Another Fish
Animals have gotten trapped in ice throughout history, but for brothers Anton and Alex Babich, they found a unique pair of animals frozen together in ice in Wawasee Lake in the state of Indiana. What separated this find from others was that it was two fish frozen together, and one of them was eating the other.
