EPISODE 1: It Started with a Mouse...
This docu-series explores the origins of Hyper Hippo Entertainment from the creative minds that brought it into existence.
In 2012, Lance Priebe decided to leave Disney and Club Penguin to start his own game studio. He created Hyper Hippo.
Initially, Hyper Hippo was dedicated to the creation of one game: Mech Mice. The team was small and made up mostly of folks from Club Penguin, where they had become experts in making games for kids. The vision for Mech Mice was incredibly bold and on a scale the team hadn’t worked on before; however, with their experience and expertise gained from their time with Club Penguin, they had the confidence to tackle the project head on.
The journey of Mech Mice was a long and arduous one. They spent a total of two years in development. Testing, polishing, changing, adding features, testing more, and so on. It was clear the game was full of good ideas but it wasn’t sticking; Mech Mice wasn’t going to be the success it needed to be.
So, there they were. A small, new game studio with no hits and no games in development after two expensive years. This is not a good place to be. In the winter of 2013, Lance approached the team and laid it all out:
They had six months before the studio was going to have to shut its doors for good. Lance challenged them to create a game to save the studio and he gave the games team total freedom to try any idea they could.
That’s six months to create a brand new game that would need to be the massive success they had just spent two years not achieving with Mech Mice.
They got down to work.
