For over a thousand years , the Buyi people have led a traditional life here, on these green slopes. But behind the façade of this idyllic life, these huge mountains are a barrier limiting contact between the Buyi people and the outside world.

In remote places like this, the solution frequently on offer is relocation to modern housing, a move that risks irreparably changing this age-old craftsmanship. Life here is particularly tough for women. With few opportunities, they often marry young, and remain at home taking care of the children.

But in recent years, an unexpected interest from far away in the urban world of fashion, has given women here a ticket to a better future…
