I built this model in honor of her. She was built in 1912 and went on to serve in combat in both world War I and World War II. She served escort duties in both wars, sortied several times with Grand Fleet in World War I to force the German fleet back into harbor during World War I. But I need to clear up a mistake I made during the video. She was NOT at Juland for the major naval battle of the war, I do not believe any US vessels were with the grand fleet of the Royal Navy that day. But she did erormf ably in her escort duties and definitely was a World Wr I combatant peforming a much needed taks and doing so ably...and hjad the Germans come out at any time she was performing that or other duties, she most certainly would ahve egaged them.
In World War II she served Atlantic escort duty, served in Operation Torch, which was the landings in North Africa, and then served on D-Day, being used for shore fire support for several days June 6th and beyond in 1943. she then was a major part of the battle of Cherborg, beginning on June 25th, to silence the German coastal guns. She dueled with the German coastal defense guns and was hit, but also silenced the Germans.
She then served in the Pacific War thereafter and was actively involved at the Iwo Jima and Okinawa landings in the advance towards Tokyo. She spent several days at Iwo Jima, before, during, and after the landings providing fire support. She then was at Okinawa doing the same for six weeks, being attacked repeatedly by Kamikazis, but not being hit, although she did down kamikazi aircraft, claiming four altogether.
After Okinawa she proceeded to the Philippines and finished out the war in support of ground operations there from mid MAy until August and the Japanese surrender
She returned home filled with US troops, and then made two more round trips to the Pacific as a part of Operation Magic Carpet Ride, brining US troops home from the War.
In 1947 she was set aside as a museum ship, being ultimately sold to and maintained by the state of Texas. Ultimately, in the 1990s she underwent a major refit and upkeep to keep her in good shape for decades to come. She is open for visits in the Houston ship channel in Texas to this day.
She is also now the only remaining Dreadnaught class Battle ship left in the world and, as stated, is a Museum Ship in the Houston, Texas area where you can see her, get on board and enjoy the last surviving battleship of her type. I went there and would encourage anyone to do so. Here is my youtube Video of the visit. [ Ссылка ]
I have many 1/350 scale models, mostly modern warships, but also some World War II. Google me on Fine Scale Modeler, or Youtube to see them. Or join/subscribe to this youtube channel and you will be notified each time I put out a ne video.
