Expressivo’s Music Technology Video #31 - The Magic of MusicXML Files
In today's video, I will be discussing a file format that goes well beyond MIDI, called MusicXML. This magical gift of technology allows digital composers to share their scores with other apps and software. MIDI is a wonderful format for sequencers but not as good for music notation apps and software. MusicXML uses a common language to robustly encode lots of control data for playback of your note data and for print. As of last year, MusicXML was supported by over 240 notation programmes in areas of notation, music OCR, and Digital Audio Workstations, DAWs.
The purpose of this video is not to show the native sounds of Dorico, Finale, Notion 6, or Sibelius, but for you to see the translation using the same MusicXML file in each software, and highlight the shortcomings of each. You will go away with hopefully a definite answer on which software works the best in the conversion. For me, if the conversion is filled with mistakes, sometimes it takes longer to fix them, compared with starting over in the new software or app. I'm sure there are users that can attest to this.
Our video will start with one finished example of a short piece I wrote prepared on StaffPad. It is a fusion piece of Neo-classical music with a brief classical opening of the traditional Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, then fused with a jazzy version moving slightly back a forth from classical to jazz.

The short opening and closing pieces are composed by myself, especially for the Expressivo YouTube Channel that provides helpful ways to create music using a variety of mobile apps including StaffPad, Notion and GarageBand for iOS.
As an educator and composer for many years, my goal is to share my love of music creation to help others bring out their hidden music potential with current 21st century technologies. My focus is on music creation first, theory second.
