Yesterday, we laid to rest my dear friend and brother, Emeka Anthony Ewuzie.
When I first encountered Emeka on the University of Abuja campus, I didn't realise he was a student. He lived off-campus and attended masses at St. Monica's Catholic Church in Gwagwalada. Our paths crossed during one of those General Studies (GST) classes where I held a reputation as a bit of a lord in English usage. Emeka approached me seeking clarification on a few points, and our ensuing discussion sparked a connection. At its end, he extended an invitation to attend his church, unaware that I, too, was Catholic. I informed him of my affiliation with the Nigerian Federation of Catholic Students (NFCS) on campus, and he promised to join me for one of our Sunday masses.
True to his word, Emeka appeared at church the following Sunday. As I led the congregation in choruses during the thanksgiving, his enthusiastic support made me feel like a celebrity. He vowed never to return to St. Monica's, declaring that my singing had transported him to heaven.
From that day forward, Emeka and I were inseparable. I can't recall a single moment of discord between us. Our bond was so strong that when we found ourselves interested in the same girl on campus, it only served to amuse us.
The nickname "Adaka," which I affectionately called him, was bestowed upon him by my grandmother after he accompanied me to my village I rarely visit anymore out of fear of encountering unsavoury characters.
Emeka ventured into the printing business because of my involvement in it. He often confided in me about his apprehensions regarding heartbreak, which he attributed partly to his dedication to the Lord and staying single.
As I sing this song now, "There is a Beautiful Home in a Far Away Land", in honour of my brother, I am reminded that it won't be the last tribute I pay to him. I know my singing brought him joy, as evidenced by the countless times I enjoyed vegetable stew at his home under the guise of needing sustenance to sing better.
Heaven is undoubtedly beautiful. Jesus assured us of its splendour when he spoke of the many mansions awaiting us there. Though Emeka's departure is a loss to us on Earth, I have no doubt that Heaven is rejoicing at his arrival.
To those listening, I dedicate this song originally performed by Gozie Okeke to Emeka. But as you enjoy it, contemplate the idea of eternity, for one day, like him, we too will be called to heaven. May we be prepared when that time comes.
I hold no rights to this song on Facebook, Youtube, Instagram and TikTok, It is shared solely as a tribute to my dear friend.
