(11 Jun 2018) A defense expert says that expectations about the outcome of the upcoming US- North Korea meeting should be "modest," adding that "a lot of talk and not a lot of achievement seems to be the likely outcome."
Benjamin Friedman, a defense scholar with Washington-based think tank, Defense Priorities, says that he thinks the best we can expect from the meeting is "interim steps" toward an agreement that limits North Korea's nuclear capabilities.
White House officials and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have said the ultimate objective of the meeting between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is "irreversible denuclearization of the Korean peninsula."
Friedman said that the possibility of the summit ending in failure looms as Trump can be unpredictable and North Korea has "strong reasons" to preserve their nuclear capability.
"I think a more likely failure would just be that the talks go basically nowhere," Friedman said.
"And the news story that comes out of it for a lot of the world is nothing is achieved, nothing happened. They had a summit that was long on ceremony and short on achievement."
Tuesday's historic summit would be the first between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.
