Written by City News Service - Firefighters used heavy equipment today in a struggle to extinguish a stubborn five-alarm fire burning for more than 10 hours.
The fire at Pan Pacific Fiber Inc. at 14051 Marquardt Ave. broke out around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, and the flames spread from pallets and piles of cardboard to a structure at the facility, a Santa Fe Springs Fire Department dispatcher said. `There's a lot of paper that's bunched up together,'' he said.
Firefighters were using a skip loader this morning to try to separate the bundles of paper and cardboard and thus reduce the volume of fuel feeding the blaze, the dispatcher said. But with the fire continuing to burn, two bulldozers were brought in to pull piles of paper away from the site, he said.
The fire drew crews from the Los Angeles County, Downey, Compton, Montebello, La Habra Heights and Vernon fire departments, the dispatcher said.
