The word Adhivaas when translated means 'one who is either coming back from a journey after staying in a different land for some time, or visiting from another place for a short time'
However, the usage of this word in Vedic and Pouranic text has become synonymous to a welcoming ritual on someone's arrival. An integral part of this ceremony includes the 'boron/varan' which is anointing the deity with different objects of nature to cleanse and purify the physical form of the deity.
Before the deity is prepared for 'praan pratishtha' or is awaken and charged it is imperative to cleanse the murti of all natural vices that the material used in construction of the murti possesses, including the vice of ego that the maker has knowingly or unknowingly transmitted into the murti. It also washes of all negative energy that the murti may have gathered on its homecoming. Pretty similar to the boron or 'aarti utarna' of any of our near and dear ones when they come back home after a journey or a new bride entering home.
This is always performed after the Amantran (welcoming ceremony) when we ask Maa to come home from her day's rest under the billva vriksha (woodapple tree) from her journey from Kailash on Shashti. The Adhivaas ceremony is first performed on Navapatrika (Kola Bou) then on the Mrinmayi Swaroop (clay murti) of Maa.
She is lovingly anointed with :
1. Taila-Haridra (Turmeric paste mixed with mustard oil)
2. Gandha (Sandalwood paste with Saffron)
3. Mahi (Ganga soil)
4. Shila (Stone)
5. Dhanya (Rice Grains w/husk)
6. Durva (Grass with three shards)
7. Pushpa (One lotus)
8. Phala (Fruit)
9. Dadhi (Curd)
10. Ghrita (Ghee)
11. Swastika (a small temple like structure made with rice flour)
12. Sindoor (vermilion)
13. Shankha (a small conch)
14. Kajjala (Kajal)
15. Gomayam (cowdung)
16. Sweta-Sarshapa (White Mustard seeds)
17. Swarna (a piece of gold)
18. Roupya (a piece of silver)
19. Tamra (a piece of copper)
20. Chamar
21. Darpan (small mirror)
22. Pradip (ghee lamp)
23. Mangalsutra (white thread smeared in turmeric paste, and tied with three durvas)
Once she has been anointed, a dhoop aarti is performed to complete the ceremony, and from there on the mundap and Puja area is marked as an apras area (where all austerity and purity is to be maintained of body, mind, sight, tongue and touch)
