Heart catheterization is used to diagnose and treat blockage associated with cardiovascular disease. As explained by Cindy Baker, MD, FACC, an interventional cardiologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, an abnormal stress test or other test may prompt suspicion that the heart isn’t getting enough blood. The catheterization procedure can confirm this.
If a blockage is discovered during catheterization, a balloon or stent may be used to improve symptoms. In other instances, it might be found that the heart is actually functioning quite well, and the patient is encouraged to address lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, exercise or healthy diet, which may improve their symptoms.
