Six police officers have been shot as authorities respond to an active shooting in Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon, a police spokesperson said.

Sgt. Eric Gripp, who is with the public affairs unit, said in a tweet that the officers’ injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening. They are being treated at local hospitals.

A large contingent of police officers have descended upon a north Philadelphia neighbourhood to respond to the incident.

Gripp said the shooting remained active as of 5:53 p.m. ET.

“Suspect is still firing,” he said.
