Direct questions are fine for small requests or with friends and family. For more difficult requests or if you’re asking someone you’re don’t have a close relationship with (a stranger or your boss), try making the request longer.

In this video I demonstrate how it is more polite to make requests longer in English. This is because requests that are too short seem too direct and can make the situation difficult if the response is “no”.
By making a request longer, it delays the answer, and makes it easier for someone to say “no” if they have to. Of course, this is not always ifeal, for example if you work in sales!
