So, is Cambodia a Safe destination Country?
I would say Cambodia is a relatively safe country to visit.
But, like any Country in the world, you should use your common sense and don’t leave yourself in a vulnerable position.
Violent crimes are not common; however, assaults, robberies, and sexual harassments may occur on the rare occasion, especially in remote and dimly lit areas of the cities.
The most common crimes against foreigners would be purse snatching, pick pocketing and other petty crimes.
Because Cambodia is mostly a cash society, watch out for credit card cloning and skimming which are on the rise, so
keep an eye on your credit card while paying for services and check the reciepts.
The border near Thailand and Cambodia has historically been disputed and there and on the odd occasion, clashes break out between the troops of both countries.
Although the relationships of Thailand and Cambodia over the disputed territories have improved, you should still take care when travelling in this part of the world.
Food and drink spiking may be an issue and have been reported in some areas, so do not leave drinks or food unattended.
Like any city around the world, drink spiking is a problem, so use your common sense.
Cambodia has the unwanted record of being the most bombed country in the history of the world. A viscous war was fought here, so landmines may still be a problem in some remote areas.
Therefore, I would recommend not to stray off the main routes, as there is still a chance that mined areas may be unmarked.
Traffic accidents are definitely something to be concerned of.
The traffic is what I call organised chaos, so wear a helmet if you’re on a bike and maybe avoid driving at night.
Avoiding areas of danger, using your common sense and keeping an eye out for suspicious activity should eliminate all potential risks.
Keep an eye out for counterfeit dollar notes which sometimes have been given as change in shops and clubs, so check that the money you receive is genuine and does not have any marks or damage.
Also, be aware of pickpockets on public transport, particularly in crowds or busy transit hubs.
Be very careful on overnight trains and buses and keep an eye on your belongings.
Rest assured that driving a rented motorcycle can be dangerous because the traffic is chaotic and driving conditions and standards are not good.
So, if you decide to rent a motorcycle, be very cautious and always wear a helmet.
It’s vital that you have travel insurance and you are covered in case of any accidents.
You have a disadvantage if you have an accident with a local.
Even if you are not at fault, it may still be your fault! You will find however, that most visits to Cambodia are trouble free!
Tourism is the main source of income for not only the government but for all the local businesses as well.
So, security for tourists is definitely the number 1 priority for local Cambodians.
Cambodia is a fantastic country to visit with lovely, warm, friendly people, but like any country keep one eye open, use your common sense and stay safe.
