Making Chinese BBQ at home is easy when you learn how to make char siu pork chops.
Char siu translates to “fork roasted.” The name comes from the traditional cooking technique of skewering pork and roasting over a fire. We’ve simplified that method for you so you can enjoy char siu flavor any time.
Broiled char siu pork chops owe much of their flavor to the marinade they soak in. It’s a mix of teriyaki, sesame oil, white pepper and five-spice powder. It’s the latter of those ingredients that gives char siu it’s unmistakable taste. With licorice-like anise, warm cinnamon and fennel among the five, you get sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami all in one ingredient.
Add red food coloring to the marinade to recreate the bright color you’d typically see in a restaurant.
