At a news conference in Scarborough, Ontario, Marco Mendicino (minister of public safety) announces federal support for organizations tackling gun and gang violence in Toronto. The city will receive up to $12.3 million in funding through the Building Safer Communities Fund (BSCF). The funding will support community-led projects aimed at combating gang violence and activities among at risk children, youth and young adults in Toronto. The $250-million BSCF was announced in March 2022. The minister is joined by Gary Anandasangaree (MP for Scarborough–Rouge Park and parliamentary secretary to the minister of justice and ) and John Tory (mayor of Toronto). Mendicino also faces questions from reporters on other topics including the decision of some cities not to hold Canada Day parades due to rising costs of security, and the June 28 shooting in Saanich, British Columbia. Two suspects were killed and six police officers were wounded following the shooting at a bank.
