Study done by Queen’s University in 2009

Using Commercially available size 10 barbed J-hooks to target bluegill

24 bluegills were angled and they Investigated swimming performance, physiological condition, injury levels and Lethal consequences associated with cutting the line on deeply ingested hooks.

Simming performance: No Impact

Physiological: No Impact if not bleeding, they were even still able to feed, although at lower rates.

Mortality: 3 fish after 10 days, after 10 days 17 of the fish expeled the hook, we found several intact hooks at the bottom of
the tank at the end of the experiment. Fish from other studies have found some fish can take up to 2 months to expell a hook.

More than half of the mortality that occurred for deeply hooked
fish was within hours of capture suggesting that injuries to vital
organs or the cardiovascular system was a primary contributor
to mortality


As such, angler education efforts should focus on disseminating this message to anglers
as well as encouraging the use of gear and techniques that minimize incidences of deep hooking (e.g.,
circle hooks, non-organic bait).
