WWII was an arena where mankind showed its darkest attributes and yet also its most heroic self-sacrificing acts. Little instances are more famous than the heroic stand of the Panfilov division, as they defended Moscow against Nazi encroachment in the cold winter of 1941. The situation was dire- all must be sacrificed to stop the enemy. And this is exactly what the brave Panfilov soldiers accomplished when in a 4-hour non-stop battle, they destroyed 18 Nazi tanks. Unfortunately, almost the entire platoon of the Red Army's 316th Rifle Division was killed in action while ferociously stopping the enemy.
The above is the official USSR version, which, unfortunately, is not completely accurate. It turned out that not all platoon members had perished and that the story was amped up to partially serve as a war propaganda piece. However, this does not change the fact that hundreds of 316th Rifle Division soldiers died defending Moscow that fateful winter, albeit in a different position, all along the front. By the end of the battle, the Soviet Army was victorious, but it did come at a terrible human price: 514,338 killed or missing and 143,941 wounded.
