During World War I, 306 British and Commonwealth soldiers were executed for desertion and other capital offences. Herbert Morris, age 17, of the 6th Battalion British West Indies Regiment was one of them.
On Parade visited the National Memorial. Arboretum in Staffordshire, England, and travelled to the Poperinge Death Cells in Belgium to learn more.
“There is a serious prevalence of desertion to avoid duty in the trenches, especially in the 8th Brigade and I am sure that the only way to stop it is to carry out some death sentences.” General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien 1915.
