STORYLINE
Civilians wounded in gunfire that broke out along the administrative border with the breakaway region of Abkhazia were being treated at a hospital in western Georgia on Wednesday, as experts examined the site where the shootout occurred.
Two woman taken to the hospital in Zugdidi were seriously injured.
The incident take place in the village of Kurcha.
Abkhazian forces fired on two buses carrying Georgian residents of Abkhazia who had crossed into Georgian-controlled territory to vote in Georgia's parliamentary election, and several people were wounded, Georgian Interior Ministry official Shota Utiashvili said.
AP Television footage showed Georgian experts examining two damaged buses at the scene.
An exit poll and partial returns on Thursday showed President Mikhail Saakashvili's ruling party winning a strong majority in Georgia's parliamentary election, a result his opponents immediately challenged.
Hostility between Georgia and Abkhazia has escalated in recent weeks, with each side accusing the other of preparing for military action.
Russia, which is angered by Saakashvili's push to join NATO, has stepped up its support for Abkhazia and bolstered its peacekeeping force in the separatist province.
The opposition parties share Saakashvili's wariness of Russia and his pro-Western views, so the heightened tension over Abkhazia has been more a platform for scoring points than for major policy debate.
