Hi, I'm Dave Detmer, district sales manager, Abicor Binzel. Today, I'm here to talk to you about some considerations you should make when looking to replace your current MIG gun. When looking to replace your MIG gun, it's not always as easy as just buying the same thing you've always had. Technology is always changing to make welding easier and more comfortable for the welder. The first consideration to make is amperage. It's best to pair your welding gun up to the demands of your welding processes and your power source. For example, a 250 amp power source doesn't need to be paired up with a 400 amp welding gun. Take note of your welding amperage, arc time, gas mixture, and whether or not you are pulsing. These all play a major factor when selecting your welding torch. The next consideration to make is length of your welding cable. Common lengths are 10 foot, 15 foot, 20 foot, and even 25 foot. Take note that the longer your cable length is, the more difficult it is to feed wire. Smaller wire such as an .035 or an .045 wire may have difficulty feeding up to 25 foot cables. Push pole tortures are also an option if you need to go beyond the feasible cable length of your wire type, such as in the case of softer wires like aluminum. You may not associate welding guns with comfort, but today's technology has made welding guns more comfortable than ever. Features such as ball socket string reliefs, molded, ergonomic handles, extended triggers, and rotatable necks all work together to reduce strain and fatigue for the welder. Most torches today allow you to weld with either the right or left hand, which gives you more comfort while welding. It's very important to know the make and model of your feeder are so that you can select the proper rear end connections for your welding torch. Remember these key considerations when selecting your next replacement MIG torch. Amperage, cable length, comfort, ergonomics, and rear end connection.
