But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
-- Matthew 10:19,20
But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Spirit.
-- Mark 13:11
And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: for the Holy Spirit shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.
-- Luke 12:11,12
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
-- Ephesians 6:11-13
Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
-- Ephesians 6:14-17
When I first heard this song, I had a nagging feeling that he was singing about something I had read in scripture. The most compelling line was, "... the next voice you hear will be your own." and it made me think of the verses where it is told us that, when the time comes that we are "delivered up" and brought before our accusers, we should not prepare what we shall speak in our defense but that the Holy Spirit will speak through us.
Scripture also says that we are to arm ourselves with "the word of God" for protection against any and all evil that should come against us from the "rulers of the darkness of this world," and that is what I think of when I hear Browne sing, "Throw down your truth and check your weapons ..." and "Just stand your ground ..." I imagine that he refers to "the breastplate of righteousness" and "the gospel of peace" and "the shield of faith" and "the helmet of salvation" and, finally "the sword of the Spirit" that will protect him "... against spiritual wickedness in high places."
For, in the end, when besieged by "the wiles of the devil" it would seem appropriate for him to sing when standing his ground in the open, that "... God forbid you allow them to rid you of your virtue." Thus, it seems reasonable to conclude that putting on "the whole armour of God" would allow him to "withstand in the evil day" and "... having done all, to stand." without having to ask directions or having to look to see if he's alone. For there will be no need for him to premediatate an answer, it shall be given him by the Holy Spirit who will speak in him.
