Good morning, this is your wake up call.
I woke up late this morning to see that a storm with high lightning frequency was about to hit. I grabbed my camera and ran out down the street, and I saw a couple bolts before I started filming. I captured two hits, neither of them in the frame, the second of which was extremely close and extremely loud.
There are 0.4 seconds between the beginning of the flash and the thunder, and thunder travels at about 1,088 feet per second, so the bolt would have hit about 435 feet away, or 132 meters. That is the closest I've ever been to a lightning bolt that I know of, beating my last record of 600 feet.
For the record this was not intentional. The storm arrived suddenly and in the span of about two minutes the lightning had gone from 3 or 4 miles away to already behind me.
