Good afternoon. As we continue our tribute and look back at the CBS television series' Good Morning World, we take a closer look at one of its stars: television comedic actor and stand-up comic Ronnie Schell. One of television's really good guys, he is interviewed on the Good Morning World DVD series package from 2005/S'More. This video clip is from that DVD set.
The series about two radio disc jockeys and their lives mirrored the lives of series creators Bill Persky and Sam Denoff. Both had spent their early careers in New York, and prior to becoming television writers in Los Angeles, they were DJs in New York.
As Ronnie Schell notes in this interview, the show started with high hopes, but ran into a couple of issues somewhat early on. Series co-star Joby Baker had a difficult time learning and memorizing his lines, and that may have lead to disagreements in character development between Baker and Persky and Denoff.
The show was also in a very challenging time slot, and that lead to low ratings. Schell began to get the feeling around the show's twentieth episode taping that things were not going well. His manager (who as also an associate producer on The Andy Griffith Show and often privy to what was happening at the network) called him up and asked Schell if he would like to return to working on Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.
Interesting to note, had the show done better in the ratings and gotten a second season, there is a chance producers Persky and Denoff would have had to focus even more time on a second season of Good Morning World, and thus, less on their hit show, That Girl. The loss of World was in many ways, a gain for That Girl for the 1968-69 season.
Although the show did last just that one season, it lives on in the memories of television viewers and fans of the show, and can be currently seen on Antenna TV... check Antennatv.com for more information on scheduling and local channel availability. And as noted earlier in our tribute to the show this morning, the DVD set of Good Morning World is available (and highly recommended) at Amazon.com.
Long live Good Morning World!

Coming up later this weekend, the incredible rise to stardom of the 1967-68 television season's "It Girl", and Good Morning World's young co-star, Goldie Hawn.
