A THOUSAND MILES AWAY, The HEARTBEATS, Hull # 720 1956
Flipside: OH BABY DON'T (This one is for Uncle Phil)
Of all the great songs The Heartbeats have recorded, A THOUSAND MILES AWAY is their signature song. To me, James Sheppard was a genius when it came to writing songs for The Heartbeats and Shep & The Limelites. In my opinion every song is great! He co-wrote A THOUSAND MILES AWAY after his ex-girlfriend moved away to Texas. It was recorded in 1956 and charted nationally on Billboard in January 1957. It charted for 17 weeks and reached #53. A THOUSAND MILES AWAY was released again in 1960 on Rama #216 and charted again on Billboard in November of that year reaching #96.
The only other song that charted for them was EVERYBODY'S SOMEBODY'S FOOL on Rama #231 which charted in July 1957 for 3 weeks and reached #78.
The Heartbeats hailed from Jamaica, Queens, New York. The members were James Sheppard, Wally Roker, Vernon Sievers, Albert Crump & Robbie Tatum.
