As the FTII students protest against Gajendra Chauhan’s appointment as chairman of the institution, film fraternity have come in full support of students. Filmmaker Kiran Rao urged the government to look into and pay close attention to the matter. “It is something government should pay close attention to. We really look up to them with some hope because these are not empty protests. These are the future of our cultural institution. It is important that the government pay some attention to what’s being said here,” said Rao. She further added that if the students don’t feel inspired by the leadership then the quality of the work is bound to suffer. “It would be nice of the government if they listen to what the students need are,” she said. Lending his support to the student protest, actor and lyricist Piyush Mishra said that Chauhan is qualified to be the head of the acting department in the institute. “I don’t have any personal enmity against him. I don’t know him personally, I know him only through TV serials,” said Mishra. “If the students of the FTII are protesting and they are on strike it is very clear that they are not doing it for a selfish reason, they have nothing to gain. In fact they have everything to lose by cancelling their classes and getting into a fight. So if they are on a strike it is for something larger,” added actor and director Rajat Kapoor.
