(29 Aug 1995) Russian Defence Minister Pavel Grachev on Tuesday (29/8) condemned
Monday's Bosnian Serb shelling of a crowded marketplace in
Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital. Speaking after a conference of
Russian veterans which marked the 50th anniversary of the end of
World War Two, Grachev said peace in the Balkans could only be
achieved if the true interests of all the warring sides --
Muslims, Croats and Bosnian Serbs -- were met and well-considered.
Grachev said he doubted that NATO would carry out air strikes on
the Bosnian Serbs any time soon. He called for a widening of
UNPROFOR's authority to give UN peacekeeping troops the
possibility of using whatever weaponry was necessary to respond to
any provocation.
