Donald Trump announced his 2024 campaign for president on Tuesday — and at one point explicitly called for the death penalty for drug dealers.
Such rhetoric is eerily reminiscent of other authoritarian strongmen like Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines, who enthusiastically supported the extrajudicial killings of drug dealers and drug users for decades, both as mayor of the city of Davao and later as president of the Philippines from 2016 to 2022.
