Geeta Dutt with O P Nayyar
Geeta Roy started her career as a playback singer at the young age of 15. Unfortunately, she got labelled as a bhajan (devotional song) singer. She got the opportunity to break out of this mould due to two composers – O P Nayyar and Sachin Dev Burman. Her romance with notable producer, director and actor Guru Dutt Padukone resulted in her getting married to him; after which she started using the name Geeta Dutt.
Omkar Prasad Nayyar was from the Indian state of Punjab. He migrated to Mumbai
to pursue his passion of composing music. His first film in the year 1952, ‘Aasman’
did not create any magic; nor did his next two films ‘Baaz’ and ‘Cham chama cham’
had anything exceptional to offer. He discovered his unique style with ‘Aar paar’
(1954) by creating rhythmic vibrant tunes. After the success of this film, he remained
the highest paid music director for the next 14 years. In the first five to six years of
his career, the singer who leant beauty to his songs was Geeta Dutt. Shamshad
Begum and Asha Bhosle were also used periodically.
Their wonderful association came to a sad end, primarily due to two reasons. The
marriage of Guru Dutt and Geeta Dutt was on the rocks. Geeta Dutt started living
separately with their three children. Unfortunately, she took to the habit of drinking to
an extent that it started affecting her recording schedule. Getting exasperated with
her drinking habit, the composers started looking for alternatives. On the other hand,
O P Nayyar and Asha Bhosle were drawing close into a relationship, which lasted till
the middle of 1974. Asha being an exceptional singer, completely replaced Geeta
Dutt and O P Nayyar did not record a single song with Geeta Dutt in the 1960’s.
Nevertheless, the songs created by O P Nayyar with Geeta Dutt are popular even
with the passage of over six and a half decades. These tunes were ahead of their
times with lilting music, combination of western musical instruments like guitar,
piano, saxophone and violin along with Indian ones like sitar, sarangi and sarod. Can
the songs like ‘Mera naam chin chin chu’, ‘Bade dhoke hain is raah mein’, ‘Tum jo
hue mere humsafar’ and ‘Jata kahan hai deewane’ get ever outdated?
Geeta Dutt passed away in 1972 at the age of 41 due to cirrhosis of liver. The list of
songs used in this discussion follows:
