The war in Ukraine has thrown light on the long-standing friendship between Russia and India. Surprisingly little known - or understood - in the wider world, it's one of the most interesting and significant strategic partnerships in modern international relations. Although India has insisted that it is neutral over the Ukraine conflict, many have accused it of siding with Russia. However, recently there have been signs that things may be changing and that Moscow and New Delhi may be growing apart, perhaps permanently. But is this really the case?

India and Russia have a fascinating relationship. Although the Soviet Union recognised India's independence, Stalin resisted building close ties to the country arguing that it was still essentially a British colony. However, in 1955, the new Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev, established a close relationship that not only lasted until the end of the Cold War, but has continued to the present. In 2000, they even established a Strategic partnership. This has been built around many factors, including Moscow's support for India over Kashmir, Russia's role as a counterweight to China, and India's place as the largest purchaser in the world of Russian arms. However, in recent years there have been signs of strain. Russia has moved closer to Beijing and has also started to build ties to Pakistan. At the same time, India has moved increasingly close to key Western countries - notable the United States, Japan and Australia - as part of 'The Quad'. However, the Ukraine War has put India in a difficult position. With emerging Western partners calling for New Delhi to impose sanctions, many in India still see Russia as a key partner. So, is the strategic partnership between Russia and India now at risk?
