In "The Artist Project," the Metropolitan Museum of Art invites contemporary artists to discuss the inspiration they have drawn from its encyclopedic collection. Y.Z. Kami reflects on ancient Egyptian Fayum portraits—the incredibly preserved encaustic panel paintings that were buried with the mummified deceased—whose eternal presence and exquisite level of detail have informed his own work.
