Thomas Babou was born in Liège (in present-day Belgium). We know nothing about his early life, but it is recorded that he was organist at the Collégiale Saint-Jean-l'Evangéliste de Liège from 1687 to 1726. He had a son, Jean-François-Pascal Babou (1700-1767). who was also an organist, and who took over his father's position at the collégiale when Thomas retired from that post around the age of seventy. It is thanks to Jean-François that we have Thomas Babou's "Livre d'orgue", which contains pieces playable on both the organ and the harpsichord; the pieces date from 1709-1710. These works are written in the French or Italian styles. For this recording, I have selected two pieces, as well as a set of variations, that are perhaps especially appropriate for the harpsichord.
