Quake Survivors Struggle To Bring Life back On Track | Turkey Earthquake 2023 LIVE News | News18
Frustrated and homeless, survivors in Turkey's quake-hit Adiyaman said their conditions were rapidly deteriorating as the country marked one week since the deadly disaster on Monday (February 13).
"This one week has been bad, really bad. We are devastated," said quake survivor Serdar Inan to Reuters.
"Humanitarian aid and equipment began to arrive on the evening of third day. And it was already too late."
With hopes of finding many more survivors in the rubble fast fading, the combined death toll in Turkey and neighboring Syria from last Monday's 7.8 magnitude quake rose above 37,000 and looked set to keep increasing.
The deadliest quake in Turkey since 1939 has killed 31,643 people there and forced the evacuation of 160,000 from the quake zone, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said.
Aid arrived in the quake-ridden region to help with relief efforts where the authorities said more than 1 million were living in temporary shelters.
Donated clothes were spread out on the pavement in Adiyaman as quake survivor Habibe Polat who lost her house in the disaster, looked to find something she may use.
"We are sleeping in the yard of a mosque. We can't find a shelter. There is no water, no electricity. All of our children are sick," Polat said.
