Hooking up Macbook to an external display either to allow us to work from a larger screen and use the Mac in clamshell mode or to have a second monitor. Most of the time, it just works, but what do you do when your Mac is not recognizing an external monitor? Here is how to troubleshoot external display not working on Mac.
Method 1: Restart your Mac with the External Monitor Connected
A reboot is one of the oldest troubleshooting methods that can resolve a myriad of connectivity issues, including external monitor detection problems. If restarting doesn’t work, you could try putting your MacBook to sleep. To do so, click on the Apple logo and select Sleep. Then wait for a minute or two before waking up your MacBook.
Method 2: Check the External Monitor Connection
Make sure that external monitor is securely connected and is plugged into compatible ports (such as HDMI or Mini DisplayPort). And the most important, the external monitor is connected to power.
Method 3: Check Your Cables Connection
Make sure that both ends of the cord connecting the two devices are securely plugged in. If the connection seems okay, but your MacBook still can’t detect the external display, you may try switching the connection ports.
Method 4: Update macOS to Latest Version
Updating your computer’s software and firmware can be a great way to solve many display issues that crop up on MacBooks. Connect your computer to the internet. Click the Apple logo in the upper left corner of your screen.Select Software Updates and update to the latest version.
Method 5: Remove all Connected Adapters
Incompatiable adapters, third-party hubs may result connection issues. So remove connected adapters and try again.
Method 6: Check Your Mac Display Settings

Go to Display and adjust settings.

NVRAM (Non-Volatile Random Access Memory), is where stores system settings and preferences. It may occasionally need to be reset to resolve issues related to resolution changes.
Method 8: Use an Alternative Monitor to Test
