THIS EPISODE
Not sure how it happens, but it always does! We plan to go on a hike, and it inevitably becomes miles longer than we planned. This has happened so often that Leila (the snack and water bag packer of the family) now packs extra everything when we go on a hike! And we are so glad that she did for this one! 😉
After getting to Big Lagoon County Park and snagging an awesome site with water and electric in last week’s episode, we headed out to see the Redwood forest and give our thoughts on the comparison between the Redwoods and the Sequoias. Our plan was to hike 10-12 miles from Prairie Creek to Fern Canyon where they filmed part of Jurassic Park: The Lost Word and back. We should have known better!
The hike out to Fern Canyon was amazing, but we were blown away by walking through the stream with green ferns climbing 50+ feet up on both sides of us. Don’t worry! You don’t have to hike miles and miles to see the ferns. There is a dirt road that brings you to a parking lot with bathrooms where it is just a 1/2 mile hike in from the other side. We headed out toward the beach (after taking a wrong turn and hiking over a mile the wrong way😳) and had a wonderful picnic watching the waves crashing onto the beach before heading back through the ferns to our hiking trail.
We ended up hiking 16 miles, and though we were a little sore the next day, it was worth every step. We tell people all the time - get out and hike WITH your kids! The quiet of the woods, the fresh air and sunshine and the lack of distraction from life and technology allows your kids to open up and share things with you. The girls wanted to talk about their futures and past memories while we hiked. It was the best!
