UK: Carnival of arrests during anti-G8 summit protests

About 32 people were arrested on Tuesday in different locations in London during the "Carnival Against Capitalism" protests organised in opposition to the upcoming G8 summit.

Protesters, some masked, waving black, green and red flags marched through Oxford Street, one of the main shopping streets of London. They carried banners and signs with anti-capitalist and anarchist slogans. About hundred people protested in front of British Petroleum headquarters while another group demonstrated outside the offices of U.S aerospace company Lockheed Martin.

A large police contingent was deployed to meet the protesters in London's famed Piccadilly Circus. Police formed a line and made dozens of arrests.

The Carnival Against Capitalism is being held ahead of the meeting of the Group of Eight most powerful economies that will take place next week in Northern Ireland. Global leaders will gather at the Lough Erne hotel and golf resort on June 17-18 for the 39th G8 summit. Security has been tightened near the resort and in Northern Ireland's capital Belfast ahead of expected protests.

Activists from a group called StopG8 announced in May that before G8 summit they'll organize protests around a hundred places, which they consider symbols of capitalism. StopG8 promises on its website to "point out the hiding places of power, and take back the heart of our city for a day."
