Influenza virus is a tremendous source of economic burden -$87.1 billion annually and a frequent source of emergency room, clinic, and hospital visits. Influenza viruses of pandemic potential (e.g. avian influenza H5N1 and avian influenza H7N9) have been in circulation recently, making it important that first responders have good knowledge base regarding influenza’s disease burden, infection prevention, and control. This will describe the differences in pandemic flu viruses and the circulating strains, including a discussion on how pandemic viruses form.This online training program will describe how workers can protect themselves during flu season and in the event of a pandemic event.
