Switzerland apparently has a pretty metal academic scene. It's so metal, in fact, that not only was Eluveitie singer/ harpist Fabienne Erni able to write, record, and present a pop-metal concept album to earn her master's degree in music performance, the band she formed for her thesis in comprised almost entirely of students at her university.

“Except for Jonas,” she clarifies. “He's actually a faculty member.”

A burst of ridiculously catchy pop-metal ear-spank, the debut album from Illumishade is a far cry from the Riverdance death metal that's made Eluveitie one of the busiest bands on the global scene. “Eclyptic: Wake of Shadows” simply bleeds the kind of hooks, harmonies, and earworms that keep Delain and Amaranthe fans addicted, with heavy synth orchestration courtesy of Mirjam Schnedl. And then there's Jonas Wolf. If his guitar playing didn't impress you on those last two Eluveitie albums, I promise he will absolutely floor you within the first few minutes of “Eclyptic.”

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, Illumishade's previously planned release party has been moved online. The band commemorated the release of “Eclyptic: Wake of Shadows” (and presumably, the completion of Fabi's graduate studies) this past May 23.
