Even though the loudness wars have started to pass a little, making sure your track as loud as other releases is still important. It can be easy to leave this to mastering, hoping that the engineer can apply their magic. But there is loads you can do before mastering to increase volume.

.
It's Technical Tuesday so here’s two examples of how frequency balance affects overall loudness.
.
1. Low frequencies produce a lot of energy, so a lot of sub eats into your headroom and makes a mastering limiter work harder. This example removes all the sub to prove that point.
.
2. Your ears perceive mid range louder than low frequencies.
This means you can make a track sound louder by ensuring there’s enough going on in the mid range, both with sound choices and in the mix.
.
It helps when writing and producing to think about how your choices will impact on the mix and overall volume.
