Analysis and commentary of the Domaine Stéphane Guion, 2017 "Cuvée Domaine," Bourgueil, Loire Valley, France

Stéphane Guion's domaine by his family in the mid 1950s, and today they are organically farming (which they have done since 1965!) 8.5ha in the commune of Benais in Bourgueil.

Benais is one of 7 historical communes that make up the Bourgueil AOP. And its location in the appellation and soils are important influences on the wines that come out of this commune.

There are three main terroirs in the Bourgueil appellation:
- Recent alluvium: deep, silty-sandy soils that the bank of the Loire River
- Ancient alluvium: deep, sandy-gravelly soils that are predominantly localized in the communes of Bourgueil and Restigné
- Turonian tuffeau chalk-derived soils: found on the slopes (or the côte), higher percentage of clay in the topsoil, with the bedrock of either the Upper Turonian or Middle Turonian tuffeau chalk

All the lieux-dits in Benais are on the south and southwest-facing slopes on the Turonian tuffeau chalky soils, and this, in combination with its position set back from the Loire River, it is a general consensus that the Cabernet Franc wines from Benais are known to be some of the most structured, tannic and age-worthy in the Bourgueil appellation.

Stéphane Guion's "Cuvée Domaine" is coming from 20-30 year old vines from lieux-dits all in Benais. The topsoil in these vineyards is shallow, with a higher percentage of clay, on the Turonain tuffeau chalk bedrock. The wine sees a short maceration time and is vinified and aged in stainless steel.
