Early 40’s or your middle age is when the gum disease manifests itself. When I say that I mean that the origin of the disease would have started much earlier. It is so mild that most people tend to ignore it. Also it is not priority till it becomes a big problem in terms of bleeding, in terms of pain in the gums. So by the mid 40’s substantial amount of bone height has been lost. It is important to note that however a good dentist I am I cannot grow bone to where it was. What we can do with a lot of effort is to retain, protect and revitalise the remaining bone so that you do not loose your teeth in your early 50’s or 60’s. So to extend the life of your teeth , moderate periodontal disease will require aggressive care at that time followed by continuous periodic reevaluation with your dentist and your periodontist for the rest of your life. It is extremely important to note that if you want to save your teeth for your 60’ and 70’s the work needs to begin much earlier.
