Meet Sultan Gustaf Al Ghozali.
He’s 22.
He’s a computer science student.
And he’s just made a million dollars (in a little over a month) selling selfies as art on the internet.
So, how did he do it?
Once again, it’s a story of the strange, wacky, weird, and wonderful things that can happen in the world of NFTs.
Here’s how it all got started:
From 2017 to 2021, Ghozali took 933 selfies — something of a feat for even the most selfie-obsessed among us.
In December 2021, he decided to mint these selfies on OpenSea — effectively converting them into NFTs.
Why? As a joke. #Ghozali said he thought it “might be funny if one of the collectors collected my face.”
And collect they did.
So far, Ghozali’s selfies have been snapped up by 505 collectors all around the world.
Ghozali’s selfie series is called, inventively, Ghozali Everyday. His description of the collection? “It’s really a picture of me standing in front of the computer day by day” — brief, to the point, and, honestly, does what it says on the tin.
I’ve had a bit of a scroll, and art analysis-wise the selfies are generally similar — with Ghozali’s facial expression unchanging throughout the series. There’s a red gaming chair that figures in quite a few. Sometimes Ghozali sports headphones. Sometimes, not.
Originally, you could collect a selfie for just 3 dollars. Now, they’ve netted Ghozali over a million. As of this writing, the most expensive selfie (Ghozali_Ghozalu 528) is currently listed on OpenSea for 66,345 ETH (or about 206 million US dollars).
What provided the momentum? It seems a celebrity chef, Arnold Poernomo, happened across Ghozali’s project, got excited about it, and made a few well-placed recommendations in the crypto community. And prices for Ghozali’s selfies skyrocketed from there.
…But, should you choose to collect Ghozali Everyday, there is a caveat. Ghozali writes, “You can do anything — like flipping, or whatever — but please don’t abuse my photos, or my parents will very disappointed in me. I believe you guys, so please take care of my photos.”
Incredibly sweet. So be nice.
So, what’s next for Ghozali? Well, he plans to invest the money, and — eventually — found his own animation studio.
This story is an absolute triumph — and only one question remains: will you be collecting Ghozali Everyday? Let us know in the comments below. And like subscribe! All those good things for more videos like this one!
