In this video, Steve with Upstart Epoxy explains the differences between a single-stage pour and a two-stage pour also known as a depth effect. The first thing you always want to consider is if you would like your piece to have a multiple-layer effect or if you would prefer to leave it flush with the top of your piece. The two-stage pour/depth effect is recommended if you want to expose some of the wood or material that you were working with in addition to colored epoxy. This method does come with a little bit of precaution, however. In order to achieve a two-stage pour, you need to include two separate pouring sessions using Deep Pour epoxy. The first one will be the colored coat. We recommend leaving at least a half-inch to 1 inch above the colored coat so you’ll have room to pour a clear and transparent portion. This will create a stunning glass effect that will allow you to look into the piece. The precaution to take is when pouring the second layer of clear deep pour epoxy is to make sure your room is it at least 80°. Especially now with the cold months approaching the Epoxy really prefers warmer temperatures. The second thing to take into consideration is using a heat gun to closely monitor your clear pour. You want to take a close look after pouring and continue to use the heat gun until the project cures. This will ensure no microbubbles appear in your glass coat. These are the two most important aspects of a two-stage pour/depth effect pour.
When doing a single-stage pour there is a lot less to worry about. Most of the work we do are single-stage pours however sometimes you’ll get a client that requests more of a depth effect with their piece or you can just do it for fun! The single-stage pour really just consists of pouring enough Deep Pour to rest flush with the top of your project. Once the epoxy cures you can refine it and finish it and bam! You're all finished!
