The Habersham County Sheriff's Office has arrested and charged multiple people officials say were involved in an operation smuggling methamphetamine into a Georgia jail.

In a statement the Habersham County Sheriff's Office said that they received information on Oct. 17 that one of their employees was smuggling narcotics into the Habersham County Detention Center.

After an investigation involving the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office, authorities discovered that detention center employee and Mt. Airy resident Melanie Zeigler, 27, had allegedly smuggled methamphetamine into the jail for two inmates, Sherman Lee Fitzwater and Shawn Donald Bowden. Zeigler was also revealed to have smuggled up to three grams of the drug on at least one other time.

Zeigler has been arrested and charged with with distribution of methamphetamine, conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, transport of contraband across guard line, and violation of oath of office.

One of her alleged accomplices out of prison, Benjamin Spencer Smith, has also been arrested. Police are looking for a third accomplice, Pebbles Elaina Daniels, who is currently a fugitive.
