The ‘five freedoms of animal welfare’ are commonly used as the basis for determining what is, and what is not acceptable while farming animals. However, these ‘five freedoms’ are becoming redundant with the advancement in the field of animal welfare science.
The five freedoms include:
• Freedom from Hunger and Thirst
• Freedom from Discomfort
• Freedom from Pain, Injury and Disease
• Freedom from Fear and Distress
• Freedom to Express Normal Behavior
These five freedoms mainly discuss avoidance of negative feelings, which does not necessarily mean animals experience positive feelings. Also, there are instances when these five points contradict each other.
If you are interested in animal welfare, this is a must-watch video.
