Zubir Said - the Singapore City Council Song
Zubir Said (22 July 1907 - 16 November 1987) was a Singaporean composer who wrote the national anthem Majulah Singapura. Coming from a Minangkabau family, he learnt to play music by himself. He composed a number of songs for Malaysian films while working as a film music composer with Cathay-Keris Film Productions. He is believed to have written at least 1,500 songs, but only a tenth of them were ever recorded.
Zubir's works are widely regarded as true Malay songs as they are linked to Malay history and values. Together with his Minang contemporaries, he galvanised the national spirit in the 1950s. Besides Majulah Singapura, Zubir composed the patriotic song Semoga Bahagia which became the theme song for Singapore Children's Day. He received a number of awards towards the end of his life and posthumously for his contributions to Malay music and culture in Singapore.
