I think it is pretty clear that the 18 - 135 STM is the quietest lens Canon has produced, really impressed with the smooth silence of that lens.

The 40mm makes a bit more noise simply because it is all right there, so close to the body, the 18 - 135 can shield a bit more of that noise with its larger size.
