Did you know that one in five of all fish caught from the sea are stolen illegally? The responsible ones are often large vessels on the high seas engaged in unregulated, unreported and illegal fishing, while poor small-scale fishermen are the big losers.
Today, 93 percent of the world's fish stocks are overtaxed or fully exploited. The sea has reached its tipping point. Many stocks are collapsing due to excessive pressure on fishery resources. Endangered species are on the verge of extinction.
Overfishing also takes away the livelihoods of many poor coastal communities in developing countries, such as Mozambique.
