In 2011, the Iowa Women’s Health Study reported those taking a multivitamin were more likely to die from any cause, meaning if this result was in fact true, those taking a multivitamin were literally paying to live shorter lives.
However, this was just an observational study— making it very difficult to say with certainty that taking a multivitamin means you’re going to die sooner than those who aren’t.
And that’s exactly what they 2012 Harvard Physicians’ Study II gave us. And after a decade, the researchers found that taking a multi vitamin had no effect on the likelihood of having a major cardiovascular event like heart attack, stroke, or dying form cardiovascular disease.
Finally in 2013 we got a a meta-analysis which when designed well is like the pinnacle, the Beyonce of clinical research that analyzed twenty-one different trials and more than 90,000 individuals. The analysis found no influence on death by any cause either way. So protection or increased risk for dying from heart disease, cancer, or any other disease.
However, studies also show that a high percentage of adults and children in north America eat less than the minimum daily allowance of 10 or more essential nutrients and are therefor more likely to develop chronic disease because of these deficiencies.
A Quality, emphasis on QUALITY, a quality supplement provides the right proportions of nutrients without the danger of toxic build-up, with a balance of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in their most bio-avalible forms so our body can absorb and actually use them to prevent disease.
If you don’t have access to fresh produce or are food insecure multivitamins can help meet those gaps in nutrition. Certain antacids, diabetic, antibiotics and mental health medications and more can cause nutritional deficiencies that can’t be met with food alone. Multi-vitamins can really help these individuals.
You know how much I hate to say this, but it depends on the risks versus benefits like any other life decision. Since both the risks and the benefits appear equal, you have to take your personal health situation into consideration and if you chose to supplement, make sure to find a QUALITY multivitamin.
